Dozens of UM Surabaya Students Graduated Without a Thesis, Here's the Story

Dozens of University of Muhammadiyah Surabaya (UM Surabaya) students graduated without working on their thesis. This can happen because it uses a conversion scheme.

In the conversion scheme, students can change their thesis into publication in a national scientific journal accredited with Science and Technology Index (SINTA) 3-6 and ISSN which is proven to have at least obtained a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) from the journal manager.

Deputy Chancellor 1 UM Surabaya, M. Ridwan said, in this era of independence, learning on an independent campus required students to produce final project outcomes that could be published in scientific journals.

"The policy that has been rolled out by UM Surabaya since the Covid-19 Pandemic encourages final year students to publish their final assignments in scientific journals indexed Sinta 3-6, so that a wide audience can access and read them," said Ridwan Saturday (29/10/22)

Ridwan added that scientific papers that will be published by students in nationally accredited journals must go through collaborative research with students, and check them on turnitin and use citation applications such as Mendeley, Zootero, etc.

"The goal is that published scientific papers are truly worthy in terms of the quality of their publication, so that the impact is not only felt for students, but also for lecturers in the context of student research collaboration, and for UM Surabaya in increasing the number of publications for its community members," he added again.

As quoted from the sinta3.kemdikbud.go.id page, a total of 7,431 documents published by UM Surabaya community members in the Sinta Directory, both indexed internationally and nationally, Sinta. As well as placing Sinta UM Surabaya's overall score at 88,560 points.
