UM Surabaya English Study Program Provides Training for Orphanage Teachers

English Language Education Study Program, University of Muhammadiyah Surabaya (UM Surabaya) has completed English language training for teachers of Muhammadiyah orphanages throughout the city of Surabaya. This started with a collaboration between the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UM Surabaya and the Social Service Council (MPS) PDM Surabaya City.

The training, which lasted one week, started March 21-26 2022. Before the training, the orphanage's English teachers mapped their abilities through a placement test (initial test). Twenty participants who took the placement test were then divided into three classes, namely advanced, intermediate 1 and 2 classes.

Vawaid, an orphanage teacher from the advanced class, stated that this training was especially useful in terms of teaching strategies.

"For me this training can not only broaden the participants' knowledge of English but also personally improve my teaching skills because the material provided is also about English teaching strategies," he said.

Meanwhile Fery, the MPS representative for the city of Surabaya, in his speech said he was happy and grateful for the hard work of the teaching team from the English study program.

"I hope that the training that has been held for 12 meetings is able to improve knowledge and skills in English as well as be useful for the students of the orphanage," he explained.

Ratno Abidin, Dean of the Teaching and Education Faculty (FKIP) in his remarks said that FKIP UM Surabaya would be happy to work with MPS Surabaya City in other activities. He also hopes that the implementation of Community Service (PKM) activities will not stop at just this activity.

"We hope that this dedication will continue in accordance with the agreed MoU," he said while giving his speech.

This training activity is not only useful for the caretakers of the orphanage but also for the team of UM Surabaya English Study Program lecturers. As with the tri dharma of higher education, this activity is a forum for the dedication of lecturers to the wider community, especially within the Muhammadiyah environment.
