The Story of Hajar Milad Satriawan, a UM Surabaya Graduate Who Has Successfully Entered the Convection Business with Billions in Turnover

Being a student must be able to develop self-potential as wide as possible. Not only struggling with lectures, but students also try new things by starting entrepreneurship.

An inspirational story came from a graduate of the Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya (UM Surabaya) Hajar Milad Satriawan, a student from the Faculty of Economics from Lamongan, East Java, who has succeeded in running the convection business with a turnover of tens of millions every month to billions every year.

The man who is usually called Hamas shared his career journey which had its ups and downs before his convection business was successful. Apparently when he entered college in 2021 Hamas won an athlete scholarship for 1 year because he was active as a Tapak Suci athlete. In his second year, in order to continue his studies and survive in Surabaya, he has to work as an online motorcycle taxi during the day and sell fried food at night.

He has been working as an online motorcycle taxi and selling fried foods since semester 3. However, this did not last long for selling fried foods. In semester 4 he thought about how to work alone and wanted to create jobs, because he felt he did not have time to rest.

In semester 4, Hamas became a broker or confectionery broker, because he saw an opportunity for his friends who were looking for confectionery. In the end, he collaborated from one confection to another. This was done to pay for college and food costs in Surabaya.

When he felt the opportunity at a large convection shop, he continued to work as an online motorcycle taxi until semester 6. The difficult economy made him dream big, in semester 4 he was already thinking about saving money to buy his own machine.

"I still remember very well that at that time I had a capital of 1 million, I made it to buy used screen printing equipment, I did this business in boarding houses in the Jojoran area of Surabaya," recalled Hamas.

When he entered semester 6 he stopped being an online motorcycle taxi, he focused on his business as a convection because he managed to add several machines.

"Thank God, now I have 15 machines that I own and all of them are operating in Lamongan and are in the process of building a construction office and will open a branch in the Sekaran area of Lamongan," said Hamas.

In the midst of its current success, it seems that Hamas has chosen to return to the city of birth and raise its convection business there because its mother is alone with her younger sibling who is still in junior high school.

Even though he didn't graduate on time and had time to take time off, he felt that what happened in his life was a valuable lesson and he should always be grateful for whatever the circumstances.

"If I don't try to change my fate, life will continue to be stagnant like this. My mother is only a seamstress in the village and an honorary private teacher," he added.

Thanks to their persistence, Hamas currently has 15 employees in total from the sewing, screen printing and border computer divisions. Monthly turnover income is also quite fantastic, he can earn tens of millions every month, even within one year he can generate 1 billion.

"I gave my business the name Hamas Garment, which is actually a name that sticks with me and as a personal brand, I hope that this business will grow and have many benefits for other people," he said.

He has the principle that the best capital is not money, the best capital is youth and an unyielding spirit.

"Men may cry, don't give up!" he concluded while laughing.
