Inviting Residents of Semeru to Check Their Health, UM Surabaya Distributes Cooking Oil Bonuses

The 2022 Semeru Literacy Festival (FLS) which was held by Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya (UM Surabaya) received an enthusiastic response from the residents of Sumber Mujur Village, Candipuro Lumajang District.

One of the agendas that attracted the enthusiasm of the residents was the Healthy Semeru Movement program. A program to socialize the importance of healthy living and health checks for residents of the slopes of Merapi. The event which was held on March 23 2022 also gave bonuses to residents who were willing to have their health checked.

"The Healthy Semeru Movement is a form of campus attention to the health conditions of residents on the slopes of Semeru. The agenda started by coming to residents' homes directly for socialization on healthy living, checking blood sugar, cholesterol and distributing cooking oil. Residents were very enthusiastic to come and check health conditions them at the medical check-up event." said Junaidi Fery Efendi, FLS 2022 Operations Manager at the event location.

Junaidi also added that residents who come to check their health condition will be given a cooking oil bonus.

The provision of cooking oil is beneficial to local residents amid the current scarcity of cooking oil.

Misnati (40 years), a local resident who is a refugee with her husband, came to the event location enthusiastically. According to him, at the beginning of the eruption, he often complained of coughing due to inhaling volcanic ash.

"My hands, body and feet have also been feeling sore for a long time. I am very grateful for having a health check like this. If it can be held once every month," he said.

Apart from that, Dul Asis (60 years) a local resident who works as a farmer is also willing to join the queue. At an old age and still working as a farmer, he often complains of aches all over his body.
"This examination is very useful for me because I rarely check it. Hopefully the UM Surabaya campus will always be useful for the community," he said while receiving a cooking oil bonus.
