A few days ago the community was shocked by the delivery of material about the Sodom of the Prophet Lut by Ribut Santoso Elementary School teacher which went viral on social media. This attracted the attention of Holy Ichda Wahyuni, a child observer and Lecturer in Elementary School Teacher Education (PGSD) UM Surabaya.
Holy explained important things that need to be considered by educators who are trying to internalize sexuality education, which is important to consider the concept of student development. Explaining to elementary school children is of course very different from explaining to high school children.
"Elementary school children in cognitive development enter the concrete operational phase, namely their mental activity is focused on concrete and contextual real objects and events," explained Holy Monday (28/3/22)
Meanwhile, in the aspect of moral development, elementary school age children (7-9 years) have a conventional moral development phase, where children follow moral rules that are influenced by their external environment, for example family agreements, so that the role of parents and teachers becomes important for instilling sexuality education.
"Therefore, taboo assumptions are not a reason not to teach children sexuality education at all. Especially if an educator teaches the material in a capacity according to his discipline," he said again.
Holy gave an example that biology teachers will instill sexuality education through an understanding of biology, anatomy and physiology of the body and its changes in the growth and development phases, as well as an understanding of the function of the genitals or other reproductive organs.
The social studies teacher will talk about social interactions between humans, which are considered private spaces and which are not, as well as violations of immoral acts, and so on.
"Meanwhile, the viral case on social media teaches the history of the Prophet Lut, as his capacity as a teacher of Islamic Religion, which in Islam or other religions certainly has guidelines and guidelines regarding actions that violate religious norms, one of which is that in Islam it is the people of Prophet Lut. labeled as a form of sexual deviance,” Holy explained.
He also reminded that what Ribut Santoso explained to his students could also serve as a warning, that the dangers that stalk children actually target not only girls, but also boys. Don't ignore it, boys are also vulnerable to becoming victims of sexual violence by other men.
He further explained that sexuality education is still considered taboo. The educational curriculum is still limited to the internalization of character education with a broad meaning. In fact, as we know, we are currently facing an emergency of sexual violence, especially for minors.
If you look at the sexual education guidelines published by WHO and UNESCO in 2018, these guidelines set from the age of 5, which focuses on 7 topics; human relations, values-rights-sexuality, understanding of gender, violence-security, skills-health-welfare, development of the human body, and sexuality-sexual behavior.
"Referring to these guidelines, what the SD teacher did was actually legal, it's just that because it went viral thanks to uploads on social media it ended up reaping pros and cons, for this ITE issue I don't have the capacity to discuss it," he concluded.
