Viral: Hundreds of Villagers in Karawang Addicted to Tramadol, UM Surabaya Pharmacy Lecturer Describes the Dangers

Hundreds of residents of Mulyajaya Village, Kutatawaluya District, Karawang Regency, West Java, from children, teenagers to the elderly, are addicted to the hard drugs Tramadol and Hexymer. This was conveyed by the Head of Mulyajaya Endang Village, after the two hard drug dealers R and W were arrested and exposed anyone who consumed them.

UM Surabaya Pharmacy Lecturer Annisa Kartika Sari responded to this case. Annisa explained that tramadol is an opioid analgesic drug which was initially introduced as a safe alternative to morphine and codeine. However, with increasing cases of abuse, the negative effects and dangers of Tramadol addiction should be of concern to everyone.

“Tramadol is a prescription drug recommended for moderate to severe pain. However, because it has a euphoric effect, this drug is often misused, which can lead to addiction,” said Annisa Friday (11/8/23).

According to him, the side effects of tramadol abuse are very diverse, ranging from nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, to potentially fatal respiratory depression. One of the long-term effects of tramadol abuse is damage to the nervous system.

Annisa emphasized that the use of tramadol in the long term can disrupt the function of neurotransmitters and affect the chemical balance of the brain. Not only that, tramadol addiction can also affect liver and kidney function. Since these two organs are responsible for metabolizing and removing drugs from the body, taking excessive amounts of tramadol over a long period of time can put a strain on both, increasing the risk of damage to both organs.

Tramadol addiction not only affects the physical health, but also the mental health of the users. Depression, anxiety and sleep disturbances are frequently associated with tramadol abuse.

"Individuals who are addicted to these drugs often feel depressed and have difficulty establishing healthy interpersonal relationships," he added.

According to him, many individuals depend on tramadol due to economic problems. Costs for buying drugs illegally as well as health care costs arising from health complications can burden the user financially. Other social repercussions of tramadol addiction involve family and friend relationships. Many families are divided or feel pressured because one member has an addiction, and this can lead to social isolation and difficulties in forging harmonious relationships.

“Public education and awareness are the main keys in preventing abuse. Education programs targeting schools, universities and the general public need to be improved so that people understand the risks and dangers of abusing drugs such as Tramadol," concluded Annisa.
