The name Farhan Abimanu alias Manu has recently been widely discussed on social media, because the teenager from Bojonegoro, East Java, has been addicted to inhaling the smell of pertalite gasoline since kindergarten until now. Manu admits that if he doesn't inhale the smell of gasoline, his body will become weak.
This was responded to by Lecturer at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FIK) UM Surabaya Ira Purnamasari. Ira said that addiction to inhaling the smell of gasoline is equivalent to drug addiction. Because gasoline includes gaseous chemicals that have a strong aroma, gasoline is a fuel that contains benzene which if inhaled continuously will make the brain addicted (addictive).
Benzene is also known as a carcinogenic substance that has the potential to cause cancer and is dangerous if inhaled in high concentrations or long-term exposure.
"When the smell of gasoline is inhaled, it flows from the lungs to the heart, namely the blood circulation system and goes to the brain, automatically the toxic chemicals that are inhaled will damage the lungs, heart, brain, liver and kidneys," explained Ira Monday (8/ 5/23)
Ira also emphasized that this habit had been carried out from childhood to adolescence. It is certain that the condition of the brain, nerves and other organs of the body is not doing well. According to him, behind the pleasure, there is progressive organ damage.
“The habit of inhaling gasoline is a form of behavioral disorder. This is because inhaling with the aim of getting fly effects, hallucinations, and euphoria. But not infrequently in the end do impulsive and aggressive actions, "added Ira again.
Furthermore, Ira said that this behavioral disorder causes dependence or addiction that is difficult to stop or the effect of wanting to use it continuously, which if stopped will have the effect of fatigue or extreme pain, just like someone who is addicted.
Juvenile delinquency or often referred to as juvenile delinquency in the form of the behavior of continuously inhaling gasoline is the result of social neglect, to engage in deviant behavior.
In this case, the habit of inhaling gasoline was carried out from childhood without any prohibition or strictness from parents, which was eventually brought up to adolescence for good reason. It could be said that one of the driving factors for teenagers to inhale gasoline is the role of the family.
"We have to clarify the duties and roles of parents in children's daily lives. If it is felt that the child has committed a deviation that can harm health, immediately take the child to the nearest health service to get treatment," he said.
Finally, Ira said that neglect could be fatal. This deviant behavior can damage the nerves, resulting in decreased speech, decreased memory, slow thinking, disorientation, aggression, hallucinations, loss of consciousness, seizures and death.
