Viral Toddler Scrubbed Until Red, This is What the UM Surabaya Pediatrician Says

Recently, social media was shocked by the viral news of a baby named Baim who experienced redness on his back after being scraped. This was revealed by the mother via her TikTok account @tia.rochman.

The viral case was responded to by UM Surabaya Faculty of Medicine (FK) Lecturer Gina Noor Djalilah. Gina, who is a pediatrician, said that kerokan is the activity of applying friction or scarring to the skin, with the hope that this activity can cause dilation of the skin's blood vessels so that a feeling of comfort arises in the body, but it is not recommended that kerokan be given to children, especially babies under one year old.

In her statement, Gina explained the dangers of scraping and the impacts it could cause.

"The scraping process with strong and continuous friction will cause pain, redness, mild to severe irritation and even swelling," said Gina Friday (15/9/23)

He said that additional media used, such as money which is not necessarily clean, can make it easier for germs to enter the surface of the scratched skin.

"Media oils such as telon oil/eucalyptus oil, lotions used will further worsen the condition of skin that has experienced frictional trauma from scrapings ranging from skin irritation to skin inflammation," added Gina again.

Gina said there are several things parents can do when their child is sick, compared to scraping.

First, compress with warm water. Mothers can place a wet washcloth with a warm temperature and compress it on the baby's forehead while your little one is sleeping.

Second, fulfill the baby's fluid intake. In mild fever, consuming lots of fluids can help the child's immune system fight viruses and bacteria. Therefore, try to give breast milk or water to children who are unwell.

“Finally, take a warm shower. "This can help lower the baby's body temperature, when the water evaporates from his body," concluded Gina.
