Viral Children of Tax Officials Showing Off Their Assets on Social Media, UM Surabaya Lecturer Talks About Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Social media has been stirred up by the case of alleged abuse committed by Mario Dandy Satriyo, a child of an echelon II official at the Directorate General of Taxes who is currently receiving public attention. Not only was he suspected of committing persecution, Mario often showed off his luxury goods on social media accounts such as the Jeep Rubicon, Harley Davidson motorcycles and Triumph motorbikes.

So what causes someone to be proud to show off their wealth on social media? UM Surabaya Media Studies Lecturer Radius Setiyawan said that someone's showing off on social media is related to narcissistic personality disorder or a personality disorder in which a person will prioritize their own ego, lack empathy and have a desire for excessive recognition.

"A person who thinks he is the greatest, boasts about his abilities, knowledge, appearance, wealth, skills and other greatness, this person may suffer from narcissistic personality disorder or narcissistic personality disorder," said Radius Minggu (27/2/23)

Not only in terms of personality, Radius said, someone who often shows off their wealth will also experience problems in their real life, because this will affect relationships, work, the surrounding environment and even in financial terms.

"The most dangerous thing is when this personality feels threatened, he will intimidate, bully, even physical violence so that his opponent feels helpless and feels his existence is useless," added Radius again.

Radius said that the phenomenon that was carried out by Mario Dandy Satriyo was at an extreme level because it had reached the criminal stage and of course needed serious attention from various parties.

According to him, this case is also inseparable from the influence of social media which makes it easier for someone to express themselves and disseminate information. A person who is thirsty for recognition will do anything to get widespread attention, embrace continuous social approval or even be the center of attention in ways that are considered unnatural and even deviant in society.

"We all know, in this day and age many people make social media content a reference in life, of course this will be used by someone to increase exposure so that they are recognized and praised," said Radius again.

At the end of his statement, Radius also mentioned the phenomenon of showing off wealth carried out on social media as an effort to maintain social status in front of other people, especially if the perpetrators are from upper economic groups.

"For some people, caring for social status is very important, especially on social media, it seems as if it will confirm who they are at which social stratum, it's no wonder that many show openly the wealth they have, even though this is very dangerous, because it gives opportunities for certain individuals to commit crimes,” Radius concluded.
