Regarding the Prank Report on Domestic Violence, UM Surabaya Lecturer: Perpetuate the Culture of Violence

Prank content made by actor and YouTuber Baim Wong and his wife, Paula Verhoeven, regarding reports of cases of Domestic Violence (KDRT) to the police, received various responses from netizens.

It is known that Baim and Paula created prank content by pretending to report a domestic violence case to the Kebayoran Lama Police, South Jakarta. The video was broadcast on Baim Paula's YouTube channel. However, after receiving many responses and being called minimally empathetic, the video was deleted.

The busyness of the case has also attracted the attention of various academics. One of them is Radius Setiyawan, a lecturer at Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya (UM Surabaya).

According to Radius, pranks are now nothing new in Indonesia. Youtubers often create content using pranks as a way to increase the number of views, although sometimes it takes away the human side.

“Domestic violence is a serious matter, not a joke that can be normalized. Apart from having no empathy for victims, making domestic violence cases a joke also has the potential to perpetuate a culture of violence," said Radius Monday (3/10/22)

Although initially the content created was aimed at creating conditions so as not to panic or become tense in the midst of viral cases of domestic violence that befell public figures. But it will be annoying when everything that is said is not true.

"Making the process of reporting domestic violence cases as prank content, apart from not empathizing and respecting the victim, also has the potential to make the victim blaming the victim (victim blaming)," he said again.

Radius reiterated that the thing he is most afraid of if domestic violence is normalized is when someone who reports and is serious about experiencing domestic violence is not even trusted because it is too often made into a joke.

He asked to stop making domestic violence as a joke, it's time for the government and the community to declare zero tolerance towards violence.

"This means that there is not even the slightest tolerance for acts of violence against women, both within the family, society and the state," concluded Radius.
