Frequent Nausea when Brushing Teeth, UM Surabaya FKG Lecturer Shares Tips on How to Overcome It

Maintaining healthy teeth and mouth is an obligation. One of the easiest is to brush your teeth. Dentists recommend brushing your teeth twice a day, namely after eating and before going to bed. There are so many dental diseases that result from improper brushing. However, even after using the correct toothbrush technique, sometimes you can feel nauseous and want to vomit when brushing your teeth. This often happens especially in the morning. But one need not worry because it is not a serious problem.

UM Surabaya Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) Lecturer Prima Nerito said that this gag reflex is a normal body reaction to prevent the entry of foreign or dangerous objects into the respiratory tract. According to him, there are several other factors that cause nausea when brushing your teeth, namely:

First, using a toothbrush that is too big and brushing too hard. The nausea arises when the toothbrush hits the inside of the throat. even if you brush your teeth too hard into your mouth, it can cause irritation to the throat, causing nausea to vomiting.

Second, pregnant. In general, nausea in the morning often occurs in women who are young pregnant. This is because the body produces more hormones during the first few months of pregnancy. So, not infrequently this condition causes nausea.

Third, digestive disorders. Causes of nausea when brushing your teeth can be related to digestive problems such as stomach ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

"Increased stomach acid can cause nausea and increase when brushing your teeth. Some sufferers with sensitive stomach conditions can also feel nauseous when brushing their teeth on an empty stomach or after eating quickly," said Prima Tuesday (11/7/23)

Fourth, toothpaste that is not right. Toothpaste circulating in Indonesia mostly contains detergents which will produce quite a lot of foam. The foam on this toothpaste will help remove food residue that sticks. But for some people, too much foam will cause an uncomfortable feeling and even want to vomit when brushing their teeth.

So how to deal with nausea when brushing your teeth as follows:

According to Prima, the first is to drink or gargle warm water before brushing your teeth so that the muscles in the oral cavity are more relaxed.

Second, ensure the cleanliness of the toothbrush that will be used. This can be done by soaking the toothbrush in mouthwash or mouthwash.

Third, replace the toothbrush you use with a smaller brush head and softer bristles so as not to cause too much friction in sensitive areas.

Fourth, replace toothpaste with toothpaste that contains less foam or detergent.

Fifth, don't brush your teeth too hard or touch the back of your tongue and palate, which can trigger a gag reflex.

"If you still often feel nauseous when brushing your teeth, you should consult a dentist," concluded Prima.
