Many Infertile Eggs Circulating in the Market, UM Surabaya Biology Lecturer; Here's How To Tell The Difference

Recently, people have been shocked by the circulation of infertile eggs on the market. One of them was found by the Tasikmalaya food task force team who found sellers of infertile eggs at the Cikubruk Tasikmalaya Main Market. In East Java, a few days ago the Mojokerto City Police managed to secure a truck containing infertile eggs thanks to reports from residents.

Responding to this, Peni Suharti, a Biology Lecturer at UM Surabaya, explained how to distinguish between infertile and infertile eggs. Peni also explained the danger content if these eggs were consumed.

According to Peni, infertile eggs are eggs that don't hatch after the incubation process. Infertile eggs are known as hatched eggs (HE) or rotten eggs. The existence of infertile eggs in the process of hatching fresh eggs is actually commonplace. This can be caused by two things, namely the ovum has not been fertilized and the embryo has died during development.

"To distinguish infertile and ordinary eggs can be seen from their characteristics, infertile eggs have a paler or whiter egg shell color, usually there is a red dot on the inside of the egg, and the eggs rot faster, last five days at most," explained Peni Wednesday (13/4/22)

He added that other characteristics of infertile eggs are the yolk mixed with the egg white, the overall texture of the egg will tend to be runny, the cheap price ranges from seven to ten thousand from agents.

Meanwhile, normal eggs have brownish or brownish white shell color, no red spots found, lasts 30 days at room temperature, egg yolks are separated from egg whites, the overall texture of the eggs is thick and slimy, the price is more than twenty thousand rupiahs.

Infertile eggs should be thrown away and not consumed. Consuming rotten infertile eggs can be bad for health. The danger of consuming rotten eggs can cause diarrhea, nausea or vomiting. These symptoms can occur at intervals of 12-15 hours after eating.

Another impact caused by infertile eggs can cause itching after consumption, because the eggs consumed are moldy and will cause rashes on the skin and give itching due to fungus.

"For people who consume rotten eggs, the possibility of contracting salmonella is very high, so avoid consuming rotten eggs, because rotten eggs are eggs that have been contaminated with the salmonella virus," he explained again in a written statement.

Another impact, due to consuming infertile eggs is listeriosis or a disease caused by listeria bacteria. Not only eating eggs directly, food made using rotten eggs can also transmit disease.

"Finally, headaches, other problems caused by consuming rotten eggs are headaches, even stomach cramps, or fever," he said.

Peni advised that seeing the danger to health, people should not consume infertile eggs or rotten eggs. In addition to the public having to be wary of infertile eggs, the government should trace and prevent and impose sanctions on individuals who distribute and market infertile eggs. Likewise, people who find them should immediately report them, so that the circulation of infertile eggs can be prevented as early as possible.
