Jakarta's deteriorating air condition recently has become a topic of conversation on social media. Even DKI Jakarta is currently named the city with the worst air quality in the world, according to the IQAir website. Unhealthy air conditions certainly have an impact on public health, including children.
It is known that the main pollutant sources of air pollution in Jakarta are caused by industry and motor vehicle fumes.
Lecturer in Medical Laboratory Technology (TLM) for the UM Surabaya Applied Undergraduate Program Vella Rohmayani said that everyone has the right to be able to breathe clean air and be free from sources of disease. Air is a basic need that must be met so that humans can live.
"The availability of clean air is important, because it will greatly impact or affect the performance of organs and the degree of public health," said Vella, Sunday (18/6/23)
Vella said, air pollution is an indicator of whether an area is suitable for living or not. Polluted air can cause various kinds of health problems, ecosystem damage, and acid rain.
"The health problems that can occur due to air pollution are respiratory infections, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, depression, heart disease which can lead to cancer," added Vella again.
Vella emphasized that high levels of monoxide in the air can make a person experience a lack of oxygen supply in the body. Not only that, if airborne pollutants fall on surfaces, they can become a source of pollutants for food and drinks that are left open.
"When the food or drink is consumed it is very likely to cause problems in the digestive tract and various other diseases," he said.
