Rising Motorcycle Thefts in Surabaya, UM Surabaya Lecturer Gives These Tips

Motor vehicle theft cases are rife in the city of Surabaya. In fact, during the period 5 September-4 November 2022 there were 244 reports of motorbike theft (curanmor). The high cases of motorbike theft in Surabaya make people have to be vigilant and careful when parking and not put motorbikes in any place.

Lukman Hakim, a lecturer at the UM Surabaya Faculty of Engineering, said that automatic scooter motorbikes (Skutik) are often the easy target of thieves because they are the easiest to break into, but this does not rule out the possibility of other types of motorbikes being targeted.

Lukman provides a number of tips to prevent motorcycle theft.

First, he appealed to park in a safe place. This means that someone can park the motorbike in an official place. Official parking, such as at stations and malls, has a warranty or guarantee when the motorbike parked is lost, etc.

"When someone parks in an official place there will be CCTV that can monitor every entry and exit of a motorbike," said Lukman Thursday (11/10/22)

Both handlebars lock to the right. Locking the motorbike towards the handlebars facing left is very risky because it will create a large enough space in the ignition position. According to Lukman, thieves can exploit this by breaking into the ignition with the T key.

Third, take advantage of the SKS (Secure Key System) feature. Utilizing this feature will slow down the thief's time so he can't steal the motorbike. This SKS system is usually provided by the factory as security from motorbike theft.

Fourth use double lock. Using a double lock can prevent thieves from committing theft. To get this double key one can get it at a spare parts store such as an accessories workshop or an online store.

"The installation is quite easy, one can install a double lock on the disc or between the rims," said Lukman.

He also advised that if someone wants to leave the motorbike for a long time, it is better to use a chain that is attached to a sturdy object around it. Using a chain with a padlock will make it more difficult for a thief to open and eventually run out of time.

Fifth, use motorbike gloves. The use of a motorbike cover is to protect the motorbike from friction or dust when parked.

"However, motorbike gloves also have another function, namely to reduce the attention of thieves to commit acts of theft," concluded Lukman.
