The Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Mendikbudristek) Nadiem Makarim issued new regulations regarding permit standards for undergraduate and D4 students who are not required to write a thesis. Nadiem said the permit requirements were given to each head of the education program (head of study program) at the university.
This rule is written in the Regulation of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Permendikbudristek) No 53 of 2023 concerning Higher Education Quality Assurance. This latest regulation was launched by the Minister of Education and Culture Nadiem Makarim in Merdeka Learning Episode 26: Transformation of National Standards and Accreditation of Higher Education.
The condition is that the student study program concerned has implemented a project-based curriculum or other similar forms. Whereas for students who study on campus who have not implemented the curriculum, the requirement for graduation is a final project which does not have to be in the form of a thesis. Other forms are prototypes, projects, and other similar forms. This final project can also be done individually or in groups.
In this regard, UM Surabaya Law Faculty Lecturer Satria Unggul Wicaksana also gave his response. In his statement, Satria responded to this with five things including:
"First, the policy of converting/transitioning the form of a thesis into a final assignment into a study project is a good invasion, but it needs a big role from the Faculty/Study Program to implement the Merdeka Learn Campus Merdeka Curriculum (MBKM), so that there is a concrete form of converting activities other than thesis, ”said Satria Wednesday (30/8/23)
Both Satria said that tertiary institutions continue to encourage students who still want to write their final project in the form of a thesis-like form to be facilitated by paying attention to academic principles, academic integrity, and anti-plagiarism, jockeys, and other violations.
Third, the need for tertiary institutions to encourage autonomy in carrying out the final assignment format.
"That means don't later when it has been published in the transcript it turns out that this format is not recognized in the world of work," he added again.
Fourth, the readiness of all community members on campus to understand and implement it consistently to meet the permit requirements.
Finally, encourage the academic community and civil society groups that have a concentration in the academic field to be involved in making educational policies, so that these policies actually carry out meaningful participation and are implemented as policies that benefit all parties.
