Mount Semeru Erupts Again, UM Surabaya Lecturer: This is the Step to Save

The return of the eruption of Mount Semeru in Lumajang Regency on Sunday 4 December 2022 had an impact on the people living around the mountain.

Lecturer in Disaster and Emergency Nursing at FIK UM Surabaya, Agung Wijaya, said that mountain eruptions did not suddenly occur, but had signs or warnings.

"This sign or warning can be in the form of local wisdom or technological notifications that use an application system," said Agung Monday (5/12/22)

Agung hopes that, in facing the threat of a volcanic eruption, people who are or live at the foot of the mountain can recognize signs of increased activity in the status of a volcano, either a sign given by nature or a notification from an easily accessible application technology.

While the first step is a rescue effort, one can always access the progress of the status of the volcano through PVMBG directions, towards predetermined evacuation routes and shelters.

"The most important thing is that the local community must stay away from lava flows or hot clouds and cold lava flows," he added.

Third, prepare personal needs. Prepare a standby bag containing a mask, goggles, towel, mineral water. The function of the towel can be dampened with water and used like a mask.

Fourth, Agung advised us to prepare food that can be consumed immediately, as well as personal medicines and flashlights.

Fifth, always wear long sleeves, long pants, cover your head with a hat or helmet, use goggles and a mask.

"Masks have the benefit of preventing the occurrence of ISPA or upper respiratory tract infections caused by volcanic ash," he emphasized.

Sixth, Agung also appealed to people not to drive by car, because volcanic ash can damage vehicle engines.

Finally, he advised, when inside a house or pavilion, pay attention to the strength of the roof supports, because volcanic ash can cause roofs to collapse.

"Try to take shelter in buildings with roofs made of cast iron, never try to take risks by capturing dangerous moments related to volcanic eruptions," Agung concluded.
