UM Surabaya Lecturer: Beware of DHF in the Rainy Season

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a disease that must be watched out for because it can cause damage to blood vessels, vomiting accompanied by blood and even death. Almost every year DHF is categorized as a terrible incident.

Idham Choliq Lecturer in Community and Family Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Muhammadiyah Surabaya (UM Surabaya) explained that dengue fever usually increases during the rainy season.

"Currently, Indonesia is entering the rainy season period, so awareness of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) needs to be increased, especially for children as a vulnerable group. When the rainfall increases, it will create mosquito breeding grounds," said Idham, Thursday (3/2/22)

Idham explained that so far there has been a dengue prevention strategy through 3M, namely draining places that often become water reservoirs such as bathtubs, drums and other water reservoirs. Tightly closing water storage places such as bathtubs and drums as well as burying used items in the ground so as not to make the environment even dirtier and potentially a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Recycle used items that have the potential to become breeding grounds for dengue fever mosquitoes.

"The 3M strategy and other efforts also need to be carried out, such as using mosquito repellents, installing wire screens on windows and ventilation, giving larvicides to hard-to-drain water reservoirs, and other efforts," added Idham.

Furthermore, Idham explained that at the RW level in several areas there was already a Larvae Monitoring Officer (Jumantik) who was responsible for monitoring DHF mosquitoes.

"Jumantik must invite the public to routinely clean the bathtub, carry out mutual cooperation to clean the environment every week or every month.

At the end of his presentation, Idham emphasized that the public must increase their vigilance, just like the current Corona virus.
