UM Surabaya Lecturer: Drinking Tea Too Often After Meals Triggers Excess Stomach Acid Production

The habit of drinking lemongrass after eating is much loved by everyone. Even though tea has a lower caffeine content than coffee, if it is consumed continuously and in excess it will cause some negative side effects.

Ira Purnamasari Lecturer at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FIK UM Surabaya) explained, besides containing caffeine, tea also contains tannins. Tannins are antioxidants and are believed to be able to maintain a healthy body, however, if tannins are consumed in excess, they will interfere with the health of the body.

The first impact caused is anemia. The tannins contained in tea can bind iron in food, especially if tea is consumed with food, it will automatically interfere with the absorption of iron by the body, where iron is needed by the body in producing red blood cells, where in these red blood cells there is hemoglobin. which carries oxygen from the lungs throughout the body.

"So automatically if we consume tea excessively it will result in anemia which is better known as anemia, with symptoms like 5 L (lethargy, fatigue, fatigue, weakness, negligence)," explained Ira Tuesday (19/7/22)

The second is indigestion. The caffeine contained in tea can increase stomach acid which causes irritation of the digestive tract so that symptoms of nausea, heartburn and diarrhea appear if consumed on an empty stomach. chest and throat feel hot and burning.

“Lastly is diabetes. Tea that is consumed naturally has a good impact on health, but if it is consumed in excess, it is added with sugar and high-fat milk, it will result in an increase in blood sugar levels (diabetes)," he concluded.
