Constipation is a condition in which a person has difficulty defecating, the stool becomes hard, and strains excessively during bowel movements.

Why can consuming excess meat cause constipation or difficulty defecating (BAB)? UM Surabaya Faculty of Health Sciences (FIK) lecturer Ira Purnamasari gave an explanation.

According to him, red meat is high in fat, which makes the digestive system take longer to process food. In addition, red meat also contains hard protein fiber and high iron, which causes the stool to become harder and clot.

"These conditions result in the intestine having to work extra hard in excreting feces," said Ira Thursday (29/6/23)

Symptoms of constipation include feeling full in the stomach, farting more often, decreased frequency of bowel movements, hard and dry stools, excessive straining during bowel movements, and bloody bowel movements. Apart from that, they also feel dissatisfied after defecating, feel something is blocking them, and take longer time when they are in the toilet.

How to prevent constipation:

First, consume water. By fulfilling a minimum fluid intake of 2 liters per day can prevent someone from having difficulty defecating, while maintaining the health of the digestive system.

Both consumption of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables contain fiber which can soften stool so that stool can be excreted more easily.

"One of them is the papaya fruit, which has no doubt its function in launching defecation. Green vegetables also contain high fiber which is good for consumption to launch bowel movements," he added.

Third, consume probiotics. Tempe is a fermented food made from soybeans, containing probiotics or good bacteria which are certainly good for the digestive system. Probiotics can help improve the frequency of bowel movements to become more regular.

"Just like tempeh, yogurt also contains probiotics which can help expedite the digestive process," digestion.
