Homecoming trips can increase risks to health and these risks must be understood when planning homecoming trips, especially if going home is far away, or the destination is in a remote area.
Idham Choliq, Lecturer in Bachelor of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences (FIK) UM Surabaya explained, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and CDC, some of the most common health problems that arise during homecoming trips are as follows:
First is diarrhea. By far diarrhea is the most common risk. This is due to careless food while traveling.
The second is typhoid fever. Consuming the wrong foods and drinks, such as unpasteurized dairy products, undercooked foods, fruit or vegetable skins, well or tap water, or unclean salads.
The Three Influenza. Idham said that influenza is transmitted by an RNA virus from the Orthomyxoviridae family (influenza virus). The most common symptoms are chills, fever, sore throat, muscle aches, cough and fatigue.
Fourth, Covid-19. According to him, currently the disease Covid-19 is still in the midst of society, even now the new variant of Omicron arcturus is believed to be able to experience a spike in cases.
Fifth, Tuberculosis or TB. This disease also often occurs when traveling back and forth. Caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Transmitted through air that is polluted with bacteria released when a TB sufferer coughs.
"This bacterium enters and collects in the lungs and multiplies, especially in people with low immune systems," said Idham Monday (17/4/23)
So, in his statement, Idham suggested taking the right precautions before starting the homecoming trip in order to reduce this risk.
According to him, there are several things that must be considered by travelers before traveling to avoid health problems.
First, maintaining stamina when traveling by paying attention to consuming nutritious food, drinking enough water, vitamins and getting enough rest.
Second, wash your hands and use a mask because you can avoid infectious diseases when traveling back and forth, such as influenza, TB and Covid-19, one of which can be prevented by always washing your hands and wearing a mask.
"Finally doing vaccines, especially Covid-19, booster vaccines is one of the keys to reducing the risk of contracting the Covid-19 virus," concluded Idham.
