UM Surabaya Lecturer Explains the Virtue of Shawwal Fasting

A full month of fasting in Ramadan and celebrating Eid al-Fitr has passed, so what other practices are prioritized in the month of Shawwal? One of them is the recommendation of sunnah fasting for six days of Shawwal. This recommendation comes from the hadith:

“Indeed the Prophet SAW said, “Whoever fasts Ramadan, then accompanied by fasting six days in the month of Shawwal, it is like fasting the whole year.” (HR Muslim no 1164)

So what are the virtues of Shawwal Fasting? This was conveyed by Lecturer at the Faculty of Islamic Religion (FAI) UM Surabaya M Febriyanto Firman Wijaya.

First, one of the sunnah fasts is a shield from the fire of hell, such as the hadith from Abi Sa'id al-Khudri r.a. (It was narrated that) he said: I once heard Rasulullah SAW say: Whoever fasts one day in the way of Allah, Allah will keep him away from the fires of hell for 70 years. (Narrated by Al Bukhari, Muslim, at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa'i, Ahmad, ad Darimiy, and Ibn Majah).

Second, get the reward of fasting for one full year.

“Whoever fasts six days after Eid al-Fitr, it is as if he has fasted the whole year. Whoever does one good deed, then for him ten good deeds like that." (Narrated by Ibn Majah)

So this is the priority that will be obtained if you do Shawwal Fasting, while there are no special provisions for its implementation, it may be done in direct six-day sequence or randomly. In other words, the Shawwal fast is held between the 2nd and the 30th of Shawwal and how it can be carried out consecutively, or separately.

Third, angels will pray for people who are fasting. Like a hadith from Abi Qatada, from the Prophet SAW (it is narrated that) he said: Someone asked the Prophet SAW what do you think about fasting Arafah? The Prophet SAW replied: Fasting Arafah can erase the sins of the past year and what is left. Then the person asked again: How about fasting Ashura'? Prophet peace be upon him. replied: Ashura's fast can erase past sins. (Narrated by Ahmad).

These three virtues for those who observe Shawwal Fasting can be additional practices for us. Since the month of Shawwal is also only a few weeks away, let's carry out one of the Sunnah fasts which will have many virtues that will be obtained.
