Water is the main component in the body, which is equal to 60% of body weight. Water in the body has the function of regulating body temperature, maintaining the integrity of cell structures and body fluids, being a medium for carrying nutrients and oxygen into body cells, helping the process of digesting food, and removing metabolic waste substances through urine.
How do we meet the need for water in the body? One of them is by consuming water regularly.
Ira Purnamasari Lecturer at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FIK) UM Surabaya explained that in general adults with light activities need 2-2.5 liters per day, but when activity increases plus hot air, the fluid intake the body needs also increases.
In a written statement, Ira explained 3 consequences if a person lacks water in the body. The first impact is dehydration. A decrease in fluid intake or a lack of water consumption causes an increase in plasma concentration and a decrease in blood volume, which is known as dehydration.
This causes an increase in body temperature (fever), fast but weak pulse, decreased blood pressure (hypotension), rapid breathing, decreased urine production (oliguria), dark yellow/concentrated urine, dry mucous membranes, inelastic skin turgor, to loss of consciousness (lethargy).
"A person with overweight (obesity) has a smaller proportion of water in the body, because fat does not contain water. So if someone with obesity consumes less water, it will be easier for him to become dehydrated,” explained Ira Monday (29/8/22)
The second impact is Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). Not only does it keep the body hydrated, drinking water also functions to get rid of toxic substances in the body. The more water you drink, the more often you have the urge to urinate, which in turn will cleanse bacteria from the urinary system, so you can avoid urinary tract infections (UTIs).
"Conversely, if a person only consumes a little water, disease-causing bacteria will accumulate in the body, one of which is the bacteria that cause urinary tract infections," he added.
Three kidney disorders. The main function of the kidneys is to filter the blood from waste / toxic substances before they are distributed throughout the body, after which these toxic substances are excreted through the urine.
Ira emphasized that if a person only consumes a little water, the kidneys will work harder to filter the blood, metabolic waste that should be excreted by the urinary system eventually accumulates in the kidneys, which in the long term will lead to kidney stones and kidney failure.
“So consuming 2-2.5 liters of water per day is very necessary for the body to support the main function of the kidneys in removing toxins. It is important for us to meet the needs of fluids in the body. In addition to eliminating thirst, it also prevents the emergence of various health problems that can harm the body," concluded Ira.
