UM Surabaya Lecturer: Drinking Coffee Excessively Triggers Someone to Experience Anemia to Diabetes

Drinking coffee has become a lifestyle today, apart from its delicious taste and can reduce sleepiness, consuming coffee is considered an obligation before people do activities. Even though behind the pleasure of coffee, there is a hidden danger if the drink is consumed in excess.

Lecturer at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FIK) Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya (UM Surabaya) Ira Purnmasari explained some of the dangers caused if someone consumes too much coffee. According to Ira, one of the effects is digestive disorders.

“The caffeine contained in coffee can increase stomach acid which causes irritation of the digestive tract so that symptoms of pain in the pit of the stomach and diarrhea appear, so that the risk of experiencing GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is that stomach acid rises up to the esophagus which causes the chest and throat to feel hot and burning. ,” explained Ira Tuesday (5/7/22)

According to Ira, another impact is hypertension and heart disease. Caffeine contained in coffee can stimulate the release of more adrenaline hormones, which can cause an increase in blood pressure (hypertension) and make the heart beat faster. This forces the heart to work harder to pump blood throughout the body, which over time will cause weakness in the heart.

According to him again, anemia is also one of the effects of other dangers. Caffeine contained in coffee can inhibit the absorption of iron by the body, where iron is needed by the body in producing red blood cells, where in these red blood cells there is hemoglobin which functions to transport oxygen from the lungs throughout the body.

"So automatically if we consume coffee in excess it will result in anemia which is more or less known as anemia, with symptoms such as 5 L (lethargy, fatigue, fatigue, weakness, negligence)," he explained again.

Next is insomnia. Caffeine contained in coffee can stimulate nerve and brain activity, this is what makes a person not sleepy, causes sleep disturbances at night (insomnia), appears excessively refreshed which over time results in feelings of anxiety, restlessness, and nervousness.

"Finally is diabetes, coffee that is consumed naturally has a good impact on health, but if it is consumed in excess plus sugar and high-fat milk, it will result in an increase in blood sugar levels (diabetes)," he concluded.
