Maintaining heart health needs to be strived for at all times, including during the fasting month of Ramadan. Lecturer at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FIK) UM Surabaya Fatin Lailatul Badriyah gave several fasting tips to keep the heart healthy.
According to Fatin, Lecturer in Critical Gadar Nursing and Medical Surgical Nursing, the first thing that must be done is to regulate food portions.
"When breaking the fast, eat in moderation, you don't need to overdo it so that someone feels too full, because this will help reduce risk factors for heart and blood vessel disease," said Fatin Friday (22/4/22)
Both lots of vegetables and fruit. Vegetables and fruit are also low in calories and rich in fiber. Vegetables and fruit are excellent sources of vitamins and minerals. These ingredients are components for heart cells, thereby helping the body prevent heart disease.
Third, consumption of whole wheat as a source of carbohydrates and fiber. Whole wheat or whole grains are an excellent source of fiber which plays a role in regulating blood pressure and heart health. Choose whole wheat flour, whole wheat bread, oats, brown rice as a food menu at dawn and breaking the fast.
"Furthermore, one needs to avoid unhealthy fats. Consumption of saturated fats and trans fats must be avoided or reduced when breaking the fast and dawn because it is very important to help lower cholesterol levels in the body," he added again.
High levels of cholesterol can cause plaque in the blood vessels called atherosclerosis. This can increase your risk of experiencing heart disease such as a heart attack or stroke. Better to choose a source of fat from avocados, nuts and seeds, olive oil, canola oil.
Finally, choose protein that is low in fat, the benefits of fasting for heart health are very important, you can also choose protein sources that are low in fat. Examples include meat without skin or fat, fish, eggs, soybeans, tofu, tempeh, skimmed or low-fat milk.
"With this low-fat protein source, it will help a person's body reduce fat and cholesterol intake which can cause heart disease," he said.
