UM Surabaya Lecturer: This is a Safe Vaccine for Pregnant Women

Pregnant women are one of the vulnerable groups who have a high risk of exposure to disease, especially Covid-19 infection. These conditions certainly need special attention, so that maternal and infant mortality rates due to Covid 19 can be suppressed.

Uswatun Hasanah UM Surabaya Health Specialist and nursing lecturer explained that vaccination is one way to protect pregnant women from the risk of being exposed to Covid 19, because it will form specific immunity in the body.

“Giving vaccines to pregnant women is of course safe and has been approved for use. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended giving the vaccine to groups of pregnant women," said Uswatun, Tuesday (15/2/22).

Uswatun also explained the policy of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia which had been issued since August 2, 2021 relating to administering vaccines to pregnant women. This policy is contained in circular letter HK.02.01/I/2007/2021 concerning COVID-19 vaccination for pregnant women and screening adjustments in the implementation of Covid-19 vaccination.

"Of course not all pregnant women who will be vaccinated, pregnant women must be in good physical condition, special screening will be carried out and must meet the requirements according to the ministry of health circular," added Uswatun.

He emphasized that pregnant women who will receive vaccines meet the requirements such as blood pressure of no more than 140/90 mmHg, no accompanying physical complaints during pregnancy, do not have chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, lung disease, asthma and HIV, do not have allergies and auto-related diseases. immunity, and others.

Furthermore, he emphasized that if there are conditions that must be met before receiving a vaccine, of course the type of vaccine received must also be in accordance with what is recommended. Several vaccines that are recommended for pregnant women and whose safety has been proven through research are the Covid 19 vaccine types with the mRNA platform, namely Pfizer and Moderna, as well as the Sinovac inactivated platform vaccine.

"These vaccines are recommended because after administration and monitoring there are no problems found in pregnant women either at the end of pregnancy or in babies born," he explained

At the end of his statement he explained that scientists had also not found an increased risk of miscarriage among vaccine recipients with the Covid-19 mRNA type before and during early pregnancy (before 20 weeks), antibodies were also found to form in the blood of the fetal umbilical cord which means that the covid 19 vaccination can also help protect the fetus.

“Thus, safe vaccinations and types of vaccines are available and can be given to pregnant women. So there is no reason to be afraid of vaccines," he said.
