UM Surabaya Lecturer; This is the type of food that must be avoided for people with heart disease

Heart disease is one of the deadliest diseases in the world that can affect anyone. Heart disease has a multifactorial cause. One of the contributors to heart disease comes from foods that are high in cholesterol as a forerunner to the emergence of cardiovascular disease.

UM Surabaya Faculty of Health Sciences (FIK) lecturer Fatin Lailatul Badriyah explained that there are several foods that heart sufferers should avoid so that the body stays healthy. One of them is food with high salt content.

Fatin explained that salt is a crystalline mineral made of sodium and chloride. Usually salt is used as a cooking spice, food preservative and to enhance the taste, texture and color of food.

“If consumed in excess, salt can cause blood pressure to increase and trigger hypertension. This disease can cause various complications, such as stroke, malignant hypertension, heart disease, kidney damage, and even liver disease," explained Fatin Monday (9/5/22)

He mentioned several examples of foods with high salt content including snacks, canned food, instant cereals and biscuits. So abstinence for heart sufferers to consume these foods.

Next up are saturated fat foods. Saturated fats are simple fat molecules that do not have double bonds with carbon molecules due to the presence of hydrogen molecules which make them saturated. Usually, saturated fats are solid at room temperature.

“Consuming foods that are high in saturated fat can increase levels of bad cholesterol in the body and can even increase the risk of various diseases, such as heart disease and stroke. So it is important to limit the consumption of foods that contain high fat, "he said again.

Not only that, foods high in sugar should also be avoided. Fatin explained that most blood sugar is produced from foods that are high in sugar and carbohydrates. Sugar in food can be absorbed directly by the intestines and becomes blood sugar. Meanwhile, carbohydrates will be broken down first into a simpler form, namely sugar, before being absorbed by the intestine into the blood. examples are white bread, energy drinks, fast food, sweet deserts.

Next up is fast food. Behind the delicacy of fast food, there are many harmful substances. There is a fat, sugar and carbohydrate content that can cause a spike in blood sugar in the body after being eaten. In addition, fast food also contains high levels of salt and high levels of saturated fat as well.

"It's still the momentum of Eid like this, heart sufferers also need to avoid pastries. Pastries are one of the foods that should not be consumed in excess for heart sufferers. This is because high sugar content can cause an increased risk of diabetes," he explained.

Lastly is food and alcoholic beverages. In addition to increasing the risk of death, food and alcoholic beverages can damage the liver or liver. This organ functions to help digest food, neutralize toxins in the blood, regulate sugar levels and cholesterol levels in the blood, help the process of blood clotting, and produce hormones.

“If a heart patient consumes food and alcoholic beverages, they will be at risk of experiencing liver function disorders. Not only that, the dangers of alcoholic beverages will also increase the risk of various other health problems," he said.
