UM Surabaya Lecturer: This is How to Do First Aid for Accidents According to the Victim's Condition

The traffic accident that occurred today reached a fairly high number which resulted in the victim experiencing injuries, broken bones and even death. Community understanding as well as fast handling is a solution to prevent the severity from occurring until the victim dies.

"The participation of the community is also very much needed in providing first aid when at the scene of the incident, but the record is that the community must really understand and master the knowledge. Don't let his good intentions help even worsen the victim's condition," said Agung, a lecturer at the UM Surabaya Faculty of Health Sciences (FIK).

Agung Wijaya, who is also a disaster and emergency expert, explained that in helping victims in an emergency, someone can call the emergency number (112) for an ambulance or the authorities. He explained before helping to make sure we are safe or not at risk of injury.

Asking for help from people around to secure the scene of the incident and asking for help from other people must also be done. It is important to move the victim in a safe place using a stretcher or a hard flat mat. Avoid lifting the victim by hand or carrying.

"The first thing to do is make sure the victim is still alive or dead by holding the pulse on the right neck. Ensuring the victim's awareness by means of the victim being able to communicate actively or not, if he is unconscious we need to call him to respond to a helper's call or stimulate his pain point, "explained Agung again.

Avoid giving the victim something to drink which may cause the victim to choke. Make sure the victim does not experience airway obstruction or shortness of breath by listening to the victim's breathing. If there is an obstruction or snoring sounds are heard from inside his mouth, immediately clear the airway.

“If the victim is wearing a helmet when an accident occurs, don't take it off right away, it needs someone who is an expert to remove it. If bleeding is found, cover it immediately by squeezing and pressing the area. Avoid applying oil, gasoline, soy sauce or toothpaste to the wound area," he added.

At the end of his statement, Agung emphasized and reminded him not to take photos or videos, especially to disseminate through social media without good informative and educational information.
