In the midst of the current soaring cooking oil prices, the public must remain vigilant against several diseases that can affect the body if too much consumption of foods containing bad fats (LDL) can be detrimental to health.
"Fat itself is the slowest digested macronutrient, this will slow down stomach emptying, causing flatulence, nausea, cramps and diarrhea," explained Ira Purnamasari, a lecturer at the Faculty of Health Sciences, UM Surabaya.
Ira explained that oily foods that contain lots of calories also cause a person to be overweight and to become obese, where obesity itself causes various health problems such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer.
Cholesterol is formed from saturated fat which is obtained from the oily food we consume. Cholesterol is a waxy yellowish fat that is needed by humans to a certain extent, however, if cholesterol circulates in the blood in large quantities, it will accumulate on the walls of the arteries.
"If left unchecked over time it will thicken and harden so that it can block blood flow to the heart and brain, causing a person to suffer from coronary heart disease and stroke," explained Ira Sunday (20/3/22)
Apart from coronary heart disease and stroke, oily food can also cause diabetes. Saturated fats contained in oily foods do not directly make blood sugar soar, but the increased cholesterol levels produced by these fats can cause insulin resistance.
"Where insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas, plays an important role in controlling blood sugar," he added.
Finally, oily foods such as fried foods can also cause cancer. Hazardous substances in cooking oil which are not used once for frying, produce hazardous substances.
"This dangerous substance is called acrylamide which sticks to the fried food we consume, where this substance is a carcinogenic compound or a cancer-triggering substance," he said.
