UM Surabaya Lecturer: Prevent Hypoglycemia by Eating Sahur

Sahur has the meaning of eating and drinking in the early hours of the morning which is sunnah before dawn before dawn for Muslims who are going to fast. In addition to preventing someone from weakness caused by fasting, there is also a blessing in eating sahur.

Eating sahur is an opportunity to fill the body with energy, the body's cells need energy to work, one of which comes from blood glucose. Apart from delaying hunger and avoiding lethargy during fasting, the benefits of sahur also keep blood sugar levels stable.

Ira Purnamasari Lecturer at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FIK) UM Surabaya explained that glucose or blood sugar is a source of energy for the body. Glucose is obtained from foods that contain carbohydrates such as rice, bread, flour, and potatoes. Apart from food, glucose is also produced naturally in the liver.

"If we skip sahur, we will be at risk of experiencing hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia is a condition when blood sugar levels are below normal. Hypoglycemia occurs when blood sugar levels are below 70 mg/dL,” explained Ira Wednesday (6/4/22).

Ira explained that the condition of hypoglycemia or low blood sugar levels causes the body to experience a lack of energy for activity. Skipping sahur causes the body to experience a lack of nutrition, which is characterized by symptoms such as easy hunger, dizziness, weakness, difficulty concentrating, pale, cold sweat, tremors, palpitations, and decreased consciousness.

"So it is important for people who are fasting not to skip sahur, by eating foods that contain energy sources such as carbohydrates, fats and proteins. So that glucose in the blood is maintained, “concluded Ira.
