UM Surabaya Lecturer Shares 5 Tips for Getting High Scores on the TOEFL Exam

TOEFL or Test of English as a Foreign Language Paper Based Test is an English proficiency certificate that is used to determine the extent to which a person's ability to master the foreign language. The TOEFL certificate is an important file or document that is very influential in academic and career matters.

Waode Hamsia, a UM Surabaya English Education Lecturer, said that the higher a person's TOEFL score, the more useful the certificate is because it will make it easier to use when applying for a job or applying for a scholarship.

So what are the tips that can be done to get a high score on the TOEFL exam? Here are the details:

First, often watch English films. According to Waode, this is a fun method because it is mobile friendly and able to increase the sensitivity of the sense of hearing because they are used to foreign languages as well as get entertainment.

“One can start by understanding the conversation without subtitles, listen to the conversation and how they pronounce the words in English. If something is not understood, write it down immediately and look up the meaning in the dictionary,” said Waode Monday (16/1/23)

Second, get used to conversing in English. This will make it easier as well as apply and correct the pronunciation and accent of each English vocabulary. Besides that, chatting in English with yourself or with other people will build self-confidence as well as build positive habits.

Third, choose your favorite genre of English song and sing it every day. According to Waode, pleasant tunes make it easier for the brain to absorb any foreign language vocabulary and it's easy to remember, because each song has the power of lyrics and personal emotion.

"Listening to western or English music will really help someone in facilitating or increasing vocabulary (vocabulary), besides that this step will strengthen one's listening for the better," he added.

Fourth, multiply reading references in English. Do this by reading bilingual books or English novels, change the cellphone settings menu to English.

"In order not to be boring during the learning process, avoid novels that are too heavy, find a preferred genre," he said again.

Finally, learn about the TOEFL test and simulate it. Waode explained that to achieve this target one needs to make an independent target score to be obtained. Do a speaking to reading test every day.

“Learn consistently every day. Try to study with discipline, at least allocating at least one hour every day to practice your English skills so you can pass the TOEFL exam with a satisfactory score," concluded Waode
