UM Surabaya Lecturer Shares 5 Tips for Savings During Ramadan

Entering the month of Ramadan, most people's expenses are usually greater, so saving tips during Ramadan are very important to apply. During Ramadan, it may appear that food expenditure is reduced due to fasting, but in reality the opposite is true.

This happens because during the month of Ramadan, many people want a delicious and complete iftar and sahur menu. Unknowingly, this makes expenses greater than usual.

UM Surabaya Economics Lecturer Fatkur Huda shared a number of tips that one can do to save money during the month of Ramadan.

Fatkur said, the first thing to do is big shopping at the beginning of Ramadan. Entering the beginning of Ramadan, there is often an increase in the price of basic necessities, but there are also shops that offer attractive offers by giving special discounts.

“Someone needs to make a shopping list and shop in bulk at the same time. This is intended to avoid sharp price increases in the middle of Ramadan or ahead of Eid," said Fatkur Tuesday (21/3/23)

Second, determine the priority of breaking the fast outside the home. Ramadan is the best moment in various activities, one of which is hospitality. Breaking the fast is an alternative to strengthen friendship, but it should be noted that breaking the fast outside the home will certainly set a bigger budget.

"Therefore, it is necessary to minimize iftar activities outside the home. For example, it is necessary to choose a priority moment for breaking the fast outside the home, such as breaking the fast with office friends, hanging out friends, work partners and family," Fatkur added.

Third, combining menu dishes for iftar and sahur. Apart from breaking the fast, another thing that needs to be taken into account is the sahur activity. In our sahur activities, we can set the menu together with the iftar menu. This means that we just have to choose a food menu for breaking the fast that can be reheated at dawn. Thus one does not need to shop for two menus at once.

Fourth, sort out the needs. Ahead of Eid al-Fitr, there will be many moments for shops and marketplaces that offer attractive offers, such as super discounts, free shipping facilities, cashback and so on.

“This condition will certainly trigger us to hunt for additional needs. If this happens, we need to be selective in choosing these offers, which are of course a priority need and which can be postponed to be fulfilled later," he said.

Fifth, use the cashback facility or member shopping points. The use of shopping points that were obtained long before Ramadan is a part that can be utilized as a savings facility. Becoming a member sometimes provides more facilities so that it can be utilized during the month of Ramadan.

"This will reduce the total costs we pay, as a result will reduce our expenses during the month of Ramadan," concluded Fatkur.
