Homecoming has become a tradition of society in Indonesia, especially for Muslims. Many people go home to their hometown by private car mode of transportation. But before traveling back and forth, one needs to check the various components of the car, this is to ensure the readiness of the car so that the trip back and forth is comfortable and safe.
So what are the car components that must be checked before going home? Lukman Hakim, a lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering, UM Surabaya, explained 8 car components that must be checked.
First, according to Lukman is a machine. The most important and important thing on a trip is to check the condition of the vehicle's engine. Ensuring the machine is ready for use, it is necessary to check the car engine by carrying out a standard tune-up.
"The easiest and simplest thing that can be done is to ask a mechanic to clean the engine, reset the valves, spark plugs, and change the oil," said Lukman Wednesday (19/4/23)
Apart from that, it is also necessary to check the fuel lines to the combustion chamber, especially if the piston rings have signs of wear, they should be replaced immediately and if necessary replace the spark plugs with new ones so that the ignition is more perfect.
The second is to check the availability of oil. Oil functions to lubricate various working and rubbing machine components so they don't wear out and get damaged when the vehicle engine is running. So before traveling it is necessary to check all components of the oil. Such as engine oil, brake fluid, and several other lubricants for vehicle parts.
The three radiators ensure that the car's cooling system on the radiator is safe and sound, whether the condition of the radiator fluid needs to be replaced with a new one. Then it is necessary to replace it with a special liquid (coolant) and don't carelessly replace it with water or something else.
"Radiators have a hard way of working and need special fluid capabilities, because they have the ingredients needed and are actually detrimental if they are careless," added Lukman again.
Fourth, brakes and legs. Long trips are very dangerous if the brakes and supporting legs of the car are not checked for their condition. When traveling long distances, you need to check the components, starting from the suspension, ball joints, tie rods, to the wheels and tires. In addition, the condition of the brake pads also needs to be checked, if there are signs that the brake pads are worn out and don't feel good, they should be replaced with new ones.
Fifth, check the car tires in good and normal condition, the goal is to prevent burst or punctured tires and the tires must have enough wind power to carry the load while traveling. If the tire is not suitable for use, it will experience a decrease in grip on the road surface.
"The condition of tires like this is very dangerous, especially when driving in the rain," he said.
Sixth, check the main lights. This is very much needed when traveling that has long distances. At night, drivers need clear lighting to see the road conditions. Besides that, turn signal lights are also needed when driving to give signs to other vehicles. So it is necessary to ensure that the electrical system such as cable connections as a whole functions properly and normally.
Seventh, travelers need to check the wipers so that there are no problems such as crashes when it rains. If you feel that the wiper rubber is bad and doesn't grip the glass, don't ever hesitate to replace it. Also, don't forget to fill the wiper fluid to the recommended limit.
Finally, other tools and fittings. If all vital component parts are considered sufficiently checked and okay, then it is necessary to prepare additional car accessories such as keys and tools needed when replacing car components.
"Don't forget to bring driving licenses to comply with traffic regulations," concluded Lukman.
