Lecturer at FT UM Surabaya: This motorbike part must be checked during the rainy season

Entering the rainy season, motorcycles really need to be checked and maintained. Apart from washing, the machine area and its surroundings also need attention. Because, if you don't pay attention, it could be that the motorbike suddenly breaks down or is difficult to start, of course this will be troublesome.

UM Surabaya Faculty of Mechanical Engineering lecturer Arif Batutah said that riding a motorcycle during the rainy season must really be prepared. One must prepare equipment such as a raincoat, a standard helmet for head protection and rubber sandals.

Arif explained that there are at least 7 parts that need to be checked diligently during the rainy season so that the motorbike remains in top condition.

First check the air filter. Dust attached to the motor, including the air filter section, needs to be cleaned. The condition of a dirty air filter makes the motor become powerless and wasteful of fuel.

“Replace the air filter when it reaches 12,000 KM. Checks are carried out more often if the motorbike is driven in a wet or dusty area," said Arif, Tuesday (25/10/22)

Second check spark plugs. Arif recommends cleaning every 4,000 kilometers, if the spark plug is still good, keep cleaning it. Replace the spark plugs if there are indications that the motor is experiencing problems, someone can replace them with original spark plugs.

Third check on the brakes. Brake motor speed controller has an important role in safety driving. High intensity braking when traveling makes the brakes wear out quickly, replace the brake pads if they are worn out or worn out, clean the area around the brakes and make sure to avoid dirt that can hinder the braking process.

Fourth, check the condition of the chain and gear sprocket. For motors with manual transmission, check the condition of the gear and chain, a chain that is too loose or tight can damage the gear system and be dangerous.

"The automatic type checks on the CVT and V-Belt sections, checks every 8,000 KM and replaces the V-Belt for a maximum of 24,000 KM," added Arif again.

Fifth, check the condition of the tire or tires. Check the condition of the wind pressure and the condition of the tires, the tire pressure must be within specifications. Tires that are thin because they have been used up can be dangerous when driving. According to the instructions for using tires, if the batik or development of the upper tire is flat, it will be replaced immediately.

Sixth oil change. The oil keeps the motor performance at its best, the engine oil is replaced every 4,000 KM maximum. Gear oil for automatic transmission is replaced every 8,000 KM or every 2 years.

Finally clean the motor. Dirt due to rain causes the body, lower components of the motor or engine to be damaged quickly, the motorbike should be washed immediately, rinse all parts of the motorbike to remove any adhering dirt.

"Wipe all parts of the motorbike with special motorbike soap and soft sponge, rinse the motorbike again with clean water and dry it," concluded Arif.
