FK UM Surabaya Lecturer: These 6 Foods Trigger Oily Skin

It's normal for individuals to have oily skin. However, if the skin produces excess oil that can trigger acne, it's a good idea for someone to pay attention to their diet. This is because certain foods can trigger oil production and cause excess sebum production, which can eventually lead to acne.

Lecturer at FK UM Surabaya Neny Triastuti who is also a Beauty Doctor explained that these 6 foods can trigger oily skin.

First is salt. Consuming excess salt can cause dehydration, water retention, swelling and eye bags. Salt can also cause an increase in oil levels as the skin tries to fight off the dehydration caused by salt.

"For this reason, limit salt intake by avoiding processed foods that contain high levels of salt and avoid adding extra salt to food," said Neny Wednesday (28/9/22)

Both red meat. Red meat is high in saturated fat, which can increase skin inflammation. This excessive inflammation can lead to excess oil production. One can limit saturated fat intake by diverting consumption of red meat to poultry or fish.

All three refined grains. Refined flour loses fiber, minerals, antioxidants, fat, protein, vitamins, and other important carbohydrates when processed. Refined white flour commonly found in breads, cakes, cereals, pasta and rice is believed to cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels.

"This will result in higher levels of insulin in the bloodstream, and will lead to excess oil production in the skin," he says.

According to Neny, whole grains can be an excellent alternative to refined white flour. Consuming brown rice, quinoa and whole grain pasta will provide high levels of fiber intake which will keep blood sugar levels stable and balance oil production.

Fourth spicy food. Spicy foods can be beneficial for your metabolism, but unfortunately they have a very bad effect on your skin, especially if you are prone to conditions, such as acne and rosacea, which are caused by overly oily skin. Hot and spicy foods will raise your body temperature and dilate blood vessels, which will irritate your skin and make it more inflamed.

"If you want to balance oil production and control oily skin, reduce your consumption of spicy foods. In fact, if you are trying to get rid of acne and rosacea, you should stop consuming spicy food altogether," he explained.

Fifth dairy product. Milk and dairy products can trigger facial skin to become more oily, even acne. Dairy products contain high levels of hormones that stimulate the sebaceous glands and can increase oil production and clog pores.

As an alternative, one can replace animal milk with almond or walnut milk. Also, replace conventional cheese products with vegan cheeses.

Last is sugar. Foods high in sugar have been shown to increase the production of IGF-1, a peptide hormone that stimulates growth but can also lead to excess sebum or oil production. To avoid oily skin, you must reduce your daily sugar intake.

"Someone who likes sweet foods, try replacing high-sugar snacks with healthier sweet foods, such as fruit or salad," concluded Neny.
