In Islam, one of the superior and main acts of worship is fasting. Fasting is sometimes mandatory, such as fasting in Ramadan, while others are punished by sunnah. One of the sunnah fasts that Muslims cannot ignore today is the Arafah fast.
Arafat fasting is a sunnah fast that is done on the 9th of Dzukhijjah. In PP Muhammadiyah Announcement No.1/MLM/I.0/E/2022 concerning the determination of the results of reckoning for Ramadan, Shawwal, and Dzulhijjah 1443 Hijriyah, it is determined that the day of Arafah (9 Dzulhijah) falls on Friday 08 July 2022.
UM Surabaya Faculty of Islamic Religion (FAI) Lecturer Mohammad Ikhwanuddin explained the virtues of Arafat fasting for a Muslim.
According to him, in a long hadith regarding the type of fasting someone asked the Prophet, as in the history of Abu Qatada al-Ansari, the Prophet was asked about the Fasting of Arafah. Rasulullah then replied that fasting on Arafat gives one the opportunity to get forgiveness for the sins of the past year, and sins to come.
To refer to "the past year and the coming year", Imam Muslim uses the editorial "al-sanah al-madiyah wa al-baqiyah (Hadith No. 2804 from the path of Muhammad bin al-Muthanna and Muhammad bin Basyar) and the editorial "al-sanah allati qablahu wa al-sanah allati ba'dahu” (HR. 2803 from Qutaibah bin Said and Yahya bin Yahya al-Tamimi). While Imam Ahmad uses the editorial "madiyah wa mustaqbalah" (Hadith No. 22588 from the line of Yahya bin Said).
In the study of hadith studies, the use of different editorials but calling for the same meaning and meaning is referred to as the history of bi al-ma'na. Even though some circles doubt this pattern of history, it is not a history of bi al-lafzi (a narration that uses the same editorial), but the existence of one hadith with another hadith strengthens each other and makes a hadith have many sanad paths.
Moreover, in the study of takhrij hadith, it was found that the presence of narrators in the transmission of sanad has good quality and is connected to each other, so Muslims will certainly consider it well to participate in carrying out the Arafah fast which falls on Friday, 08 July 2022.
Regarding the meaning of "forgiveness of sins", in the hadith above, Imam al-Nawawi explained in al-Minhaj Syarh Sahih Muslim bin Hajjaj (Juz 03, p. 113) that the elimination of sins contained in the hadith is for small sins ( al-saghair).
"If a person has no minor sins, then this fast will be recorded as goodness (kutibat bi hasanat) and causes a person to be elevated in rank (rufi'at bihi darajat)," explained Ikhwan who is also vice chairman of the Indonesian Dai-Daiah Association (ADDAI) Java East Sunday (3/7/22)
In fact, Imam al-Nawawi explained, if a person has one or several major sins (kabiratan au kabair), while the minor sins are gone, then this fast is expected to be a reminder (takhfif) for these sins.
“May Allah destined us to meet the day of Arafah and given the opportunity to undergo the Arafah fast, as well as other services, with the hope that our past sins will be forgiven by Allah, and we will always be protected by Allah to be kept away from sinful acts. ,” he concluded.
