Economics Lecturer Reveals 5 Tips to Avoid Online Shopping Fraud

Most people are now familiar with online shopping methods, both through marketplaces and with other online shopping methods. This condition is increasingly in demand by many groups, especially for those who have little time.

Fatkhur Huda, Lecturer in Islamic Economics, University of Muhammadiyah Surabaya (UM Surabaya) explained that online shopping is an alternative because of the flexibility and speed of transactions, just by clicking on the category of goods we want, everything will be presented with a variety of choices.

He explained that behind the convenience of online shopping, people tend to ignore the principle of re-examining the items they want to buy, moreover, these items are placed on a promo dashboard with a certain time limit, so quick decisions need to be made but also awareness of fraud in online shopping transactions.

“First, don't be tempted by a low price, especially if the price is far from the market price. So we need to suspect whether the seller really sells goods online or just wants to make a profit by making buyers prey," said Fatkhur, Sunday (27/3/22)

He added that it is important for buyers to see reviews, this aims to find out the ratings of other people who first bought the product at the store they want to go to.

"Pay attention to the number of product sales, this can give an idea that a shop that has managed to sell hundreds of goods, of course, can be sure if it is not a fake shop," he added again.

He further explained that it is important to look at the ratings given. Seeing online shop ratings sometimes looks simple, but this is a supporter that the store's progress is good or bad. Giving a rating cannot be done by clicking, but those who have made transactions can give a rating. Of course if the shop has deceived the customer, it will not be given a good rating, which is exactly the opposite.

Finally, make a transaction in the marketplace. Make payments using a joint account that is registered on the marketplace, not making transactions using a personal account obtained through chat or other communications outside the marketplace, because if you use a joint account in case of fraud the funds will be returned, unless you do it with the COD system.

"With the sophistication of technology, it is fitting for us to increase literacy for actions that will be taken, including online shopping. If you still don't understand, it would be nice if you communicate or ask other people who understand better," he concluded.
