The frequency of defecation or what is known as BAB normally in a day can vary from each individual. In general, the range that is considered normal is between three times a day to three times a week. However, these are only general guidelines and fall within a broad range.
Lihabi, UM Surabaya Laboratory Assistant said, if someone has bowel movements more than three to four times a day and the consistency is runny in the stool, then this can be said to be diarrhea.
"However, if the bowel movements are less than three times a week and the consistency of the stool is dense or hard and difficult to get out, this can be called constipation or constipation," said Lihabi Friday (11/8/23)
Some of the factors that affect the frequency of bowel movements include daily diet such as spicy foods, coffee and certain medications, physical activity, gut health, stress levels, and dietary fiber intake.
"Any change in bowel pattern, such as a drastic change in stool frequency or texture, can be a sign of a health problem and may need further evaluation by a medical professional," he added.
Lihabi explained that there is no single limit that is universally recognized because many factors affect an individual's bowel pattern. Reliable medical resources, such as the Merck Clinical Manual, state that the normal variation in frequency of bowel movements can range from several times a day to several times a week.
