Is it true that too much consumption of sacrificial meat can trigger disease? This is the Explanation of a UM Surabaya Lecturer

Central Executive (PP) Muhammadiyah has set Eid al-Adha 10 Dzulhijjah to fall on Wednesday 26/6/2023. Eid al-Adha is a big holiday that is synonymous with the slaughter of sacrificial animals, where during this holiday many people consume meat, both beef and mutton.

Dede Nasrullah, a lecturer at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FIK) UM Surabaya, explained that someone who consumes too much sacrificial meat is at risk of disease.

Dede explained, meat is a food source that is high in protein and high in fat. We need to be aware of this high fat and protein content when eating meat.

“Many of our people process meat into satay, rendang, curry and so on. Consuming meat for health has many benefits, especially in terms of building muscles, increasing immunity and preventing anemia," explained Dede Wednesday (28/6/23)

First it will cause constipation / constipation, because this meat does not have fiber which can help to improve digestion. Because if someone consumes a lot of meat then someone can combine it with consuming vegetables and fruits.

"Second there will be digestive problems, consuming too much meat containing animal protein but low in fiber, then digestion in our body will be problematic because the bacteria in the stomach don't get enough fiber nutrition," he stressed.

All three will cause dehydration / lack of fluids, protein digestion requires great energy, and requires water to remove excess nitrogen from the breakdown of protein molecules in the intestine.

Fourth, it will increase the risk of diseases related to cholesterol and fat, such as heart disease, causing blockage of blood vessels.

Fifth, it causes more sweating and can trigger bad body odor. When you eat meat, the body must expend energy to digest and process it, causing a person to sweat easily and can trigger bad body odor.

Sixth you will experience fatigue easily, this is caused by all the energy expended to digest foods that contain lots of meat, besides that beef contains high tryptophan so if you consume too much the body will feel tired and will cause drowsiness after eating.

Seventh, there is a risk of cancer, in some cases meat management can form carcinogenic compounds such as heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

"HCA is formed when meat is cooked at high temperatures, while PAH is formed when organic matter is burned in meat, thereby increasing the risk of cancer," he said.

Eighth. There is a risk of developing kidney stone disease, excess protein due to consuming meat can affect the kidneys because purine compounds from meat can form uric acid which can increase the risk of kidney stones.

"Finally, it can cause weight gain. Consuming excess meat can increase body weight, especially meat that still contains a lot of fat in each piece," he concluded.
