Is it true that consumption of peanuts triggers facial acne? This is the Explanation of the Lecturer of FK UM Surabaya

There are several suspected reasons for claims that eating peanuts causes facial acne. One of them, is the activity of the digestive system after consuming these foods. Nuts contain high fat and protein so it takes a lot of time and effort to digest them.

Neny Triastuti, a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine (FK) UM Surabaya, explained that eating peanuts causes pimples on the face, which is actually just a myth.

According to him, the slow digestion process that is carried out causes a person's immune (immune) cells to become active so that they produce antibodies to overcome this problem. These antibodies can irritate the sebaceous glands or oil glands thereby increasing the production of excess sebum or natural oil.

"Excessive sebum production can clog pores so that it risks causing acne to grow," said Neny Sunday (11/9/22)

He explains that peanuts make acne actually not true. Excess oil production has a high risk of causing acne. Eating nuts makes acne allegedly also occur because of the high levels of omega-6 essential fatty acids in them.

"The body generally requires an ideal intake of omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids with a ratio of 1:3," he added.

Neny explained that a study published in the journal Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy revealed that the commonly consumed nuts usually have a less than ideal ratio of omega-3 and omega-6, namely 1:17. This is a problem because omega-6 fatty acids are a type of nutrient that can increase the risk of inflammation in the body, especially when consumed in too large amounts.

Meanwhile, several studies have shown that omega 3 fatty acids are a source of anti-inflammatory nutrients. If consumed in sufficient quantities, omega-3 fatty acids can actually prevent the formation of acne.

"It is the imbalance between omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids that causes the body to experience inflammation or inflammation so that it risks exacerbating the condition of the skin with acne," he said again.

Although the link between dietary omega 6 fatty acids and the risk of acne looks promising, it should be noted that there are no studies that can scientifically prove the notion that eating nuts causes acne.

"So further research is needed to prove whether nuts cause acne to appear or not," concluded Neny who is also a beauty doctor.
