UM Surabaya IT Experts Share Tips to Avoid Fraud under the guise of Package Delivery

There are more and more types of fraud mode in the name of shipping services. Some have checked the receipt for the J&T Express delivery service with a request to download an application in the viral APK format on Twitter social media. Fraudsters pretend to be messengers and send files with APK extensions which are actually dangerous and contain spyware.

UM Surabaya IT expert Taufiqur Rohman said spyware is malicious software designed to enter smartphone computer devices for the purpose of collecting important information about a person, then forwarding it to a third party without approval.

"Spyware can also refer to legitimate software that monitors someone's data for commercial purposes such as advertising," said Taufiq Wednesday (7/12/22)

According to his explanation, spyware is explicitly malicious which is used to profit from stolen data such as in the case of lost ATM balances.

In a written statement, Taufiq shared a number of tips that can be done to avoid fraud under the guise of sending packages, including:

First, don't click on links in text messages. Use the courier's official app or go directly to the delivery official website. Scammers are increasingly adept at copying websites of trusted organizations, so extreme caution is needed when clicking on suspicious in-text links.

Second, check the tracking number on the official app or website. If someone is not sure whether the text is real, check the tracking number on the app or the official website of the courier, not the link from the text message.

"If the message is genuine then on the official app or website, the tracking number will display our package delivery information, if it is a scam, the tracking number will not work," said Taufiq.

Third, check the URL and SSL certificate. According to Taufiq, a site that has an SSL certificate is not automatically a real site, because this can be obtained free of charge with a little verification. Always check the site's URL and if one is unsure, use a search engine to find the legitimate version of the site.

Fourth, install applications only from official apps. Most of android devices use app source from Google Play Store.

“Make sure the Google Play Protect service is enabled if our device supports it. This will ensure that any spyware on our devices can be detected and removed, so that our smartphones are safe from spyware," he added.

Taufiq advised, if someone accidentally downloads the APK file, then immediately turn off the internet network, then look for the installed APK file and immediately delete the file that comes from the APK file source.

"By looking at the latest detailed time information, continue by restarting our smartphone, so that smartphone performance can return to stability," concluded Taufiq.
